One of the things that I talk about with my clients and within my courses is how you overcome the peer pressure when you’re trying to order a little bit better at a restaurant or when you’re surrounded by a group of people.

So often people come to me and they say, “Well, I don’t want people to think that I’m just trying to eat healthy or I don’t want people to think that I’m better than them, or that I don’t want them to feel subordinate because I’m eating healthier than them.”

The thing is are you trying to get someone to like you or are you trying to get someone to respect you?

Because I will tell you in my experience that “like” isn’t always something that comes first. Your colleagues, your clients, and your associates don’t always have to like you and THEN respect you. A lot of times, they can respect you first and THEN like you. On a subconscious level, people know when you’re making healthy decisions, as long as you’re not rubbing it in their face.

Here’s what I recommend when you’re ordering at a restaurant.

Don’t pick apart the menu.

Don’t be one of those people that is a total pain in the rear with the waiter. Know your menu, know what you need to eat, be clear and decisive about what you’re choosing so that you’re calm, cool, and collected. That way those that are around you see it as “business as usual.” It doesn’t look like you’re trying to be better than anybody else. It just looks like you are making a conscious decision to live a better life that’s going to allow you to perform better.

Here’s the thing, when you’re sitting at a meal with clients, they see you making a disciplined choice that is clearly affecting your health and performance. They say to themselves, “Wait a minute, this person is making a disciplined response, he’s making a disciplined decision to eat well. He probably will do this for me as a client, as well.”

They may not say that, their emotions may not even reflect it, but we all know that they’re thinking it. Because they know you are harnessing more discipline than they are, when it comes down to business they know that you’re the person they need because you have discipline and professionalism.

Be proud, order healthy, you don’t have to order junk just because everybody else is!
